Music

Mr. William Lovelace
Music Teacher

The fundamental goal guiding all music planning instruction at St. Joseph School is to assist the next generation of Catholic Church musicians: instrumentalists, cantors, and most importantly, the ordinary members of the congregation who come together to worship God in song.  The program strives to familiarize students with as much significant, traditional music as possible.  It also prepares non-Catholic students for a life worship of the Lord according to their faith.

The literacy repertoire relies heavily on traditional American folk music and singing games which can serve as learning tools for Catholics and non-Catholics alike.  The music used by the Catholic Church for her traditional music, for the most part, is shared by most Protestant churches, (i.e. same tunes, but with slightly altered texts in some cases).

Students perform in the Advent/Christmas Program each December.  Grades 3 through 8 also have the opportunity to participate in the Special Events Choir.

SJS has an extensive variety of classroom instruments for development of student musical skills.  Rhythm instruments, xylophones, and hand chimes are used regularly at all grade levels.
