St. Joseph School embodies the philosophy that academic should be a student's first priority. To lend substance to this philosophy an academic eligibility program monitors the grades and conduct of each student athlete. All students representing St. Joseph School are held to a high standard of good grades, good conduct, and good sportsmanship.
Winning is an objective but not an end to itself. The desire to win and the preparation to win can be used as powerful tools to teach and incorporate important values into the development of young people. The following are Characteristics of Catholic Education used as a guide to determine and explain the various duties of a coach at St. Joseph School in our continued effort to develop the complete Christian Student-Athlete

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY:
The philosophy of the St. Joseph School Athletic Department is to encourage and enable student athletes to develop to their full potential as human beings, as citizens of their society, and most importantly as disciple of Jesus.
Serving youth is a priority for St. Joseph School and the Catholic Church in general. In order for student to develop, they need relationships with wise and caring adult members of the Church. Because so many youth and their parents are attracted to youth sports, sports provide an unparalleled opportunity for adults to interact with youth. Those who coach at St. Joseph School are required to coordinate their efforts with the principal and staff involved in the overall mission of Catholic school education. Student athletes who are selected for the privilege of membership on a St. Joseph school athletic team should conduct themselves as responsible representatives of the school.
Student athletes, as recognized representatives of St. Joseph School, are expected to exhibit Christ-like behavior during the season or out of the season, in uniform or out of uniform. Student athletes must serves as examples of high moral character and must demonstrate the academic commitment expected of all students. Student athletes must make every effort to perform to the best of their ability at all times. Student athletes must respect all authority, their teammates and all visiting team members.
“Sport involves more than physical strength and muscular efficiency, it also has a soul and must show its complete faith” (Pope John Paul II).
In order to do this, we at St. Joseph School focus on the soul of sport and the soul of the student athlete. |
